every you, every meme

1. What color are your kitchen plates?
The largest all-matching set are purpleish swirly (from Whittards). There are lots of clear pyrex ones too, and sion_a has some weird brown pyrex ones which are sort of oval-shaped.

2. What book are you reading now?
Still slowly making my way through Underworld by Don DeLillo; it's taking me an awful long time to read because every few sentences I just get completely overwhelmed by how good the writing style is and I want to go and read sentences and paragraphs out to people, but there's rarely anybody around who'd be interested, so I just get restless instead.

Also rereading Phantom by Susan Kay (retelling of the Phantom of the Opera story, very faithful to Leroux but elaborates and extends the story so it goes from before the Phantom's birth to long after his death), which is superb but I have read it about a million times already. Lots of other books half-read and half-given-up-on; don't seem to be able to settle down to reading very well at the moment.

3. What's on your mouse pad?
Bit of text from the Book of Kells. Unfortunately the top layer seems to be detaching itself from the mat bit, so I'm going to have to superglue it at some point.

4. Favorite magazine?
Don't often read magazines. Occasionally buy Bizarre before remembering that it's crap. Even more occasionally buy Diva before remembering it's utterly humourless and pointless. (At least Bizarre doesn't take itself seriously.)

5. Favorite smells?
Books; good coffee; garlic; patchouli; marzipan; cumin; the smells of people I love (sometimes it's their habitual perfume, sometimes just the smell of them); the smell in Lush shops (I know a lot of people think it's overpowering, but it always makes me feel happy).

6. Least favorite smells?
Milk; semen; mouldy cucumber. (What a lovely mix.)

7. What is the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning?
Mmrrrrr wanna go back to sleep now please.

8. Favorite color[s]?
The colour of glacier-fed rivers; the colour of the sea; the colours of the sort of sunsets where you just know that there must be some kind of afterlife because somebody up there is letting Blake paint the skies; the colour of the sky when you're watching sunrise from thousands of feet up -- the velvet-blue bit between the stars and the rising sun... The blue of blue LEDs; the colour of gunmetal (somewhere between blue and grey and green and black); the colour of folded Japanese steel ....

I don't really do colours in the abstract very well.

9. Least favorite color?
The washed-out lime-greenish-yellow that sion_a's bathroom is. It doesn't go with anything, it looks dirty no matter how clean it is... it just has no redeeming features.

10. How many rings before you answer the phone?
Huh? Depends where I am, where the phone is, and how I feel when I see who's calling (on the mobile, that is -- don't have callerdisplay on the landline).

11. Future child's name?
"Bloody Miracle".

12. Do you like to drive fast?
Not really. I like being driven fast if I feel that the person driving really is in control of the vehicle; it's a trust thing, though. People who drive like sales reps all the time, even when we're just driving to the supermarket or something, just piss me off.

13. Do you sleep with a stuffed animal?
That's no way to talk about sion_a! (Not usually. Sometimes if I'm ill or miserable the badgers come and cuddle up next to me though.)

14. Do you like storms?
Yes, yes, yes! Rain and thunder and lightning. I get very headachey when a storm is building, and I love the sense of release when the storm actually breaks; it's the closest the weather gets to an orgasm. I love just standing out in the rain with thunder crashing around me, getting absolutely soaked through and not caring. I love forked lightning, especially over mountains.

15. What type was your first car?
Well, I've only had one car so far: pto452. She's a 1953 Series II Morris Minor, and she doesn't enjoy storms, and is currently resenting the weather a little.

16. If you could meet one human, dead or alive, who would it be?
I'd like to meet myself as a stranger; see what my first impression of myself was. That's horribly introspective, I know, but I don't think I can choose somebody otherwise. I'm supposed to say "Jesus" or something, aren't I? If I have to choose a historical figure, then I'll choose Joan of Arc. Just because.

17. Favorite Alcoholic drink?
A pint of plain is your only man.

Actually, it depends on context. Good red wine; absinthe; kirsch; b33r; all of these things are good at the right times.

18. What are your sign and your birthday?
<yawn> Taurus; May 5th.

19. Do you eat the stems of Broccoli?
Yes! Raw, too. They're the nicest bits.

20. If you could have any job, what would it be?
Professional Idler?

21. Any Hair Color I Want?
For fuck's sake, I can have any hair colour I want. That's what hair-dye is for! What kind of question is this? ... I'm quite happy with my current colour though (Lush 'caca marron' henna).

22. Have you ever been in love?
I don't think I've ever not been in love.

23. Is the glass half full or half empty?
Usually, yes. The mug of coffee is currently EMPTY.

24. Favorite movie?
Can't choose between my favourites. (The Sound of Music; The Matrix; Breakfast at Tiffany's; Yellow Submarine ... then lots of others which are nearly-favourites & which I really really couldn't put in any kind of order of favouriteness.)

25. Do you type with your fingers on the right keys?
Roughly, yeah. I type at about 85wpm so I'm obviously getting something right.

26. What's under your bed?
Blankets; clothes I don't wear any more; boxes; sex toys (tucked just under the side of the bed so they're reachable from the bed); sion_a's dirty washing (under his side of the bed).

27. What is your favorite number?
3, 4, 42, 44, 49. Also most palindromic numbers.

28. Favorite sport to watch?
Do they have knife-throwing as a spectator sport? No? Probably ice-skating, then (especially pretty Russian girls doing implausible things with their legs); or snooker (calm, precise, cultured).

29. What is your biggest fear?
Dying alone, unloved, knowing that I've missed all the opportunities I should have taken. (We've done this one, haven't we? Stop reminding me of it!)

30. Say one nice thing about the person who sent this to you.
Nobody sent it to me, I stole it off marnameow's LiveJournal. I can think of oodles of nice things to say about marnameow, for she is sparkly and wonderful and does mouth-wateringly great things with mushrooms.

31. Favorite CD?
Too many to list! They all complement each other. This is a silly question.

I often go through phases of playing a particular album to death, and then not playing it for a while. Currently the played-to-death CDs are: Kirsty MacColl: "Galore" (the best of); Red Hot Chilli Peppers: "By The Way"; Alison Krauss & Union Station: "New Favorite" (actually, this has been on the played-to-death list for over a year now); Richard Thompson: "Rumour and Sigh"; Eliza Carthy: "Rice". The soundtrack to The Matrix has only just got off the played-to-death list.

32. Favorite TV shows?
Can I count "The Prisoner" since it was a TV show, even though it isn't on any more? ... Basically I don't watch TV.

33. Ketchup or Mustard?
Mustard. (Ketchup doesn't sting enough.)

34. Hamburger or Hotdog?
Hamburger. Or rather BEEFburger, with real BEEF in it, the sort where you basically mince a steak and stick the mince together in a beefburger-shaped lump. The sort that mobbsy made for our last BBQ.

35. Favorite soft drink?
Dandelion and Burdock. I would say Coke, but that really is a love-hate relationship.

36. The best places you have ever been?
Switzerland; Dublin. Both places I'm still dreaming of emigrating to, but realistically I know I'll die in Cambridge now.

37. Burger King or McDonalds?
Out of these two, Burger King; but I'd prefer KFC.
