Oh and re housing -- part of the attraction of owning a house is being able to do things like fix shelves to the walls or even put double glazing in or have cats. A house may not be a good investment but I don't see a house as (primarily) an investment -- I mean for me it'd actually be the place where I lived, not just stocks & shares that I could buy & sell without thinking about it (as if I even knew what stocks & shares were, I mean they're things that grownups have, no idea).

Despite what the RPSCA might say, you don't need to own a house to have cats! :-) (Though, yes, it does cut down on the choice of rental accommodation available, and tends to point you towards the direction of old houses rather than new flats.)
