constantly saying "oh yeah JS/AJAX/PHP/XSLT/whatever how hard can it be" and cutting and pasting and filing the numbers off and changing variables and guessing

Butbutbut. H. told me about your discussion of this last week and I was delighted to hear I'm not the only one who does that sort of thing. Don't leave me alone here!

But most importantly: what sort of dinosaur?

I do it all the damn time. Often of my own code. Some of my code has a genealogy going back to my first attempts at Perl in 2001, which in turn I nicked off Pete.

(If I was better than this I'd put it all into modules & call it "reuse"...)

I also steal vast chunks off CPAN; on the upside at least that is the purpose of documentation, right?

Biting of fingers: erm yes well. Maybe I should stop doing this too. It's OK when I'm knitting, because then I have something to fiddle with instead.

Before you're 30: screw it, you have plenty of time to do things after you're 30. But then I have to think that :-)
(War & Peace: not worth it, IMO. Ulysses: halfway through, very very very slowly, but actually quite enjoying it.)

Ulysses is such fun that I've so far taken two years relishing it.

Happy Birthday!!

How does it feel being 30? :-D Hope you're having fun...

Re code and books and stuff:

Yeah, this is the sort of thing that makes me feel not-a-real-programmer, not having much grip on the modules and stuff & not really knowing how to do sensible refactoring (more just never-really-thought-in-that-way because when I learned perl I was the only perlmonger on a team of crazy people so I was kind of working in a bit of a vacuum and my scripts only really had to be understood by me, BAD START).

you have plenty of time to do things after you're 30

Oh I know! But it's nice to have an excuse to do stuff. :-)

War & Peace: not worth it, IMO. Ulysses: halfway through, very very very slowly, but actually quite enjoying it.

W&P -- not blown away by it so far, certainly. Any one bit of it is fine, but I don't really feel drawn into the story (such as it is so far). Will persevere though. It is mostly for the tickybox-have-you-read cred though I admit.

Ulysses I keep reading bits of and never getting all the way through, but I love the bits I have read. I really must actually just read it.

Re: Happy Birthday!!

Being 30 has, today, been very lazy. I like it. (Actually I have Done Stuff too, but only in a "hmm, I fancy Doing Stuff" way, not a tick-things-off-list way).

I quite like refactoring. I am a freak.

First rule of the internet: It's Not Just You. :-)

Srsly though I don't believe anybody actually writes Javascript, like, from scratch. Ever. I think it just grows like lichen on web pages & then people scrape it off and put it on the pure clean petri dishes of their own web pages & it slowly mutates and grows and takes over & eats into the web pages & cross-breeds, that's how we got AJAX, and eventually it will either become sentient or turn into OH NOES TEH ANDROMEDA STRAIN.

That's my theory.

As to yr other question: a brontosaur, I think. Something like this but a) it won't look as good and b) it will be yellow. Jean Greenhowe for the win.
