Nah, I'm not entirely convinced by the whole ASL thing either, for much the same reasons you give. OTOH on my daily commute there are quite often five or six cyclists in the ASL who would otherwise be squidged up on the left-hand side; however, they also tend to belt it away from the lights faster than the cars, which isn't terribly difficult in rush-hour traffic in London (probably at least partly because rush-hour traffic contains all these crazed suicidal cyclists.. ..oh well).

I love bus lanes, though: nice and wide, plenty of visibility, plenty of room to overtake other cyclists even during rush hour, and apart from the occasional psycho driver, I've found the buses largely OK as long as you don't go up the inside of them, which you shouldn't be doing anyway because it's an excellent way to get pureed.

(I say "squidged up on the left-hand side" like it's a bad thing, which it shouldn't be, except that it seems to be an excuse for car drivers to completely ignore you. In fact, one of the things I do like about ASLs is that I get to sit in front of the cars and indicate and generally give off "HELLO I AM TURNING HERE AS WELL PLEASE TO NOT BE CUTTING ME UP KTHX" signals which are hard to ignore because I'm sitting right in front of them with my arm in the air.)
