A tickybox list of IMDB's Top 100 Movies, stolen from truecatachresis. I've changed the colours in the resulting table so you can actually read it.

I've only seen sixteen of the top 100. A quick count suggests that there are a further 19 that I actively want to see (there are very few I wouldn't want to see given infinite time etc.) and that there are about 6 which I own (or have already videoed) but haven't got round to watching yet. I just seem to find it hard to block out 2+ hours of Not Doing Anything Else in which to watch a film; it's easier to find time to read, or to listen to music, because I can do them while doing other things.

it's easier to find time to read, or to listen to music, because I can do them while doing other things.

Ah, see, I knit whilst watching films, so that's OK.

I've actually seen a surprisingly large number of those. Obviously living with film-geek for 3 years has meant *something* in terms of my filmic education, after all :-)

I know this is undoubtedly Non-Helpful since you are lacking in time to watch films anyway, but I cannot recommend strongly enough that you watch Dr Strangelove, which is a work of genius. Some Like It Hot is also utterly ace, especially for Marilyn Monroe's splendid frock. And the final line, which never fails to make me laugh immoderately.

Dr Strangelove is one of the ones I want to see, and Some Like It Hot is one of the ones I've got on tape... so I'm at least going in the right direction! :-)
julietk From: julietk Date: November 24th, 2004 03:35 am (UTC) (Link)
Cool! Dr Strangelove is only 93 min long, btw, & SLIH a bare 2 hrs...
oldbloke From: oldbloke Date: November 24th, 2004 04:42 am (UTC) (Link)
We have it on DVD. Drop by some time. It's top.
rysmiel From: rysmiel Date: November 24th, 2004 07:33 am (UTC) (Link)
I heartily concur with both of these recommendations; though I suspect that seeing Strangelove for the first time will be a different experience in some fundamental ways now that we're no longer in the Cold War.
keirf From: keirf Date: November 24th, 2004 03:37 am (UTC) (Link)
Gosh. How can you read while doing other things?
j4 From: j4 Date: November 24th, 2004 03:46 am (UTC) (Link)
Huh? Are you being sarky?

I can read while travelling on trains, buses, planes -- even while walking, though I get funny looks for that one. :) I can read while I'm stirring dinner in the pan, I can read in the bath, I can read while I'm sitting on the loo or while I'm brushing my teeth, I can read while I'm eating my lunch at work...

Okay, I suppose theoretically I could buy a portable DVD player and watch films while I'm on the train etc., though using it in the bath would probably be a bad idea.

I suppose the other difference is that I find it much easier to stop and start with books than with films.
keirf From: keirf Date: November 24th, 2004 04:06 am (UTC) (Link)
No I wasn't being sarky. I try not to be sarcastic on line because it's very hard to communicate well. I guess I wasn't thinking widely enough about the things that you were considering doing at the same time.

For example I can do other things while watching a film: I can pod peas or fold invitations, or cut out paper snow-flakes. Whereas when I'm reading at home I can't do those things. And I was wondering if it was things like that, that you could do while reading.
j4 From: j4 Date: November 24th, 2004 09:40 am (UTC) (Link)
There's not many things I can do while watching a film -- I find I just miss too much if I keep taking my eyes off the screen to do something else. (I could probably pod peas without looking at them, but certainly couldn't cut out snowflakes!) I find it much easier to just flick my eyes back up the page if I think I've missed something in a book than to keep rewinding a film to catch the bits I missed.
setting_sun From: setting_sun Date: November 24th, 2004 04:09 am (UTC) (Link)
What did you think of The Sting? It's one of my favourites of all time, but people usually go for Butch Cassidy in terms of Redford/Newman partnerships.

I'd be interested to hear what the 19 are that you want to see.
j4 From: j4 Date: November 24th, 2004 06:55 am (UTC) (Link)
I can't remember what I thought of The Sting I'm afraid, it was over a decade ago that I saw it, though I seem to recall that I enjoyed it at the time. I'm afraid I have no idea who Butch Cassidy is or what Redford/Newman partnerships are; I rarely have a clue who the actors/actresses in films are, and certainly when I saw The Sting it was just, y'know, a film on telly, with people in it. I only really remember it because of "The Entertainer" being in it, and I was learning to play that on the piano at the time.

The 19 that I want to see are: Casablanca, Schindler's List, Seven Samurai, Citizen Kane, Dr Strangelove, Rear Window, Pulp Fiction, Vertigo, Apocalypse Now, Das Boot, Requiem for a Dream, Se7en, 2001, The Great Escape, Crouching Tiger..., Reservoir Dogs, A Clockwork Orange, Amadeus, Metropolis, Donnie Darko, Kill Bill, and The Seventh Seal.

Oh, er, actually, that's 22; in addition to being clueless about films, I can't count. Or else I've changed my mind about some of them since last time. That's entirely possible.

There are several I haven't heard of, & haven't bothered to go and look up on IMDB, but might well turn out to want to see them if I knew more about them...
setting_sun From: setting_sun Date: November 24th, 2004 08:20 am (UTC) (Link)
Of those you listed that you'd like to see, I particularly enjoyed Dr Strangelove and Rear Window. They're both wonderful films in completely different ways and ones that I can personally guarantee you'll enjoy, or your money back. Seriously. I have far more faith in Peter Sellers and Alfred Hitchcock than I'll ever have in myself!

I've seen 26 of them, but what is interesting is that quite a few of those I've counted as having seen but I never set out to watch them, or I didn't make it all the way through. And as a finisher-completer, I don't do that much.

I think this means many of these top 100 are actually quite pants.

The ones I've not seen and have heard of I've mostly avoided deliberately because I don't like violent or particularly unpleasant films.
addedentry From: addedentry Date: November 24th, 2004 06:34 am (UTC) (Link)
Thirty-four, for what it's worth. Many films in this chart strike me as classics - those that everyone wants to have seen but no one wants to watch. North By Northwest is one of the few I'd want to see again (well, anything with Cary Grant) and one of the few without epic pretensions.

I've managed the first half of Pulp Fiction and the second half of The Wizard of Oz, and I suppose they go quite well together, whether or not you're listening to Dark Side of the Moon at the same time.
hairyears From: hairyears Date: November 24th, 2004 04:51 pm (UTC) (Link)
Contagious, that meme. My answers are out of your way on the Hairy Ears LJ.

I've seen forty of them, for what it's worth, five of which I hated. What amazes me is that I actually went to see more than half of them. Generally films bore and irritate me, and I'd never never have guessed that I'd seen 40 of anybody's 'greatest films' list. I wonder what fraction of all the films I've ever seen that could be.

Woolgathering. Stop. My journal's the place for defluffing my ears, not yours!

Anyone up for hosting a 'Film Night'?
