"I've seen a paper corpse holing up a doorway
I heard the lonely voices singing 'yeah I did it your way'
And I held the future up to a looking glass
It bears a striking resemblance
To the embers of the past

I've seen the chorus-girls the ribbon and the rot
Seen electoral debates on the glass-rim of a whiskey shot
And I caught the glimmer in a hurricanes eye
I've seen these AK-47's with their noses to the sky

I smelled the ghosts of the ashes and the orchids
I've got promises tattooed on the insides of my eyelids
And I'll be watching when the Richter reaches 10
I bled by these weapons babe and now I'm one of them..."

"This girl is a stencil of a brushstroke in the rain
She's a ghost of the city she's a body through the windscreen
This girl is the snowfall where the spring should have been
She's the stains on the pages of a top shelf magazine

This girl is a black eye she's a bruise on your knee
She's the ashes of the people that you really meant to be
This girl's the resurrection she's the comeback
She's the absinthe and whiskey she is poetry and prozac

This girl is taking bets this girl's a silhouette can't you see

This girl is the flutter of fake lashes in the mirror
She's a ragged edged fedora or a spanish souvenir
This girl is the clean cut she’s the frozen ground
She's a knife drawn down the side street when there's no-one else around

This girl's a forged ticket to a Lloyd Webber show
She's the far end of the graveyard up where the nettles grow
This girl is the rainbow in the dewy eyed stares
She's the name tag on the toe of your long dead love affairs"

"There's computers clicking binary genius into the night
There are formulas, remedies, reasons, there is hindsight
There's the smell of artillery, There's the sky alight

We are bedrock we're undergound we are sharp as the rain
We are gathering pace we are thunder wrapped in cellophane
We are running from the storms of our youth into more of the same

There's a motorway service station on a January day
There's a lunchtime radio show there's the shit that they play
There's the percussion of buttons and keys in a cybercafe

We are some distant TV channel a lesson grown old
We are rhythm and rhyme, partners in crime we are fools gold
We are free as the wind through the trees or so we are told"

* * *

"Love your losing, lose your love
Let the hawk fly from the glove
Then do not search the skies above
Search your crazy faith

Love is lightning, love is ice
It only strikes the lucky twice
Once, so you will know the price
And once for crazy faith"

* * *

"Shade is dark
Cool and languid for life or long
Safe in shadow, it's never as dark as the daylight
As the daylight

When I was just knee high
My momma told me never try to be someone that I am not
Yet over time I had forgot
A wandering child, so lost at play
He's found himself, but he can't find his way
In the daylight"

* * *

"Holding my breath for the fear of sleep again
Holding it up behind my head again cut in deep
To the heart of the bone again round and round
And round and it's coming apart again over and
Over and over

Now that I know that I'm breaking to pieces
I'll pull out my heart and I'll feed it to anyone
Crying for sympathy, crocodile cry
for the love of the crowd and the three cheers from everyone
Dropping through sky through the glass of the roof
Through the roof of your mouth through the mouth of your eye
Through the eye of the needle it's easier for me to get
closer to heaven than ever feel whole again"

* * *

"It's always the same
Wake up in the rain
Head in pain
Hung in shame
A different name
Same old game
Love in vain
And miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Away from home again..."

* * *

"Let the disappointments pass
Let the laughter fill your glass
Let your illusions last until they shatter
Whatever you might hope to find
Among the thoughts that crowd your mind
There won't be many that ever really matter"

* * *

"No sooner had I hit the streets
When I met the fools that a young fool meets
All in search of truth and bound for glory
And listening to our own heart beats
We stood around the drum
Though it's fainter now
The older I become
Living your life day after day
Soon all your plans and changes
Either fail or fade away
Leaving so much still left to say"

* * *

"hold onto nothing as fast as you can
well still pretty good year"

* * *

"I'm already in circles and circles and circles again
the girl's in circles and circles got to stop spinning
circles and circles and circles again
thought I was over the bridge now"

* * *

"Homesick for a clock that told the same time
Sometimes you made no sense to me
If you lie on the ground in somebody's arms
you'll probably swallow some of their history

And the boy in the belfry he's crazy,
He's throwing himself down from the top of the tower
Like a hunchback in heaven
He's ringing the bells in the church for the last half an hour
He sounds like he's missing something or someone
That he knows he can't have now
And if he isn't I certainly am"

* * *

"If sand waves were sound waves
What song would be in the air now?
What stinging tune could split this endless noon
And make the sky swell with rain?

If war were a game that a man or a child
Could think of winning ...
What kind of rule can overthrow a fool
And leave the land with no stain?"

I'm just so tired of being other people's words all the time, though...

Other people's words are different. If you don't know them they can be exciting, like a fruit you've never tasted before. If they're words that you know well,and love, then it's sometimes like a comfort food from childhood that you still go back to when you need it.

Other people's words are important. They can keep my brain in the right place when it's threatening to wibble, and they can comfort me when things are bad.

That's great; who said that? ... No, seriously. Thank you. I do tend to feel like, well, a thing of shreds and patches, sometimes; it's good to hear that somebody has a better rationale for having a headful of other people's words.

(the words that you heard when you were young will always stay)

I don't want to be a fool starving for affection. But I seem to have managed to become one anyway. :-/

This is cheating slightly, but:

"Tonight I’ll sing his songs again
And I’ll play the game and pretend
But all his words come back to me
In shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness in harmony
I need someone to comfort me"

You think that I don't even mean a single word I say. It's only words,

Janet - you can sing 'most anything
