Phone solution
Web discovery of the day: Say No to 0870, a website which lets you search for cheaper standard-dialling-code alternatives to costly 0870 or 0845 numbers. Not only is this cheaper, it also means you can include those calls in your 'free minutes' or equivalent bundles (which usually exclude 0870 or 0845 numbers).

Information wants to be free; phone calls are rarely free, but at least they can be cheaper.

http://eurotechnews.blogspot.com/2006/04/ofcom-website-ofcom-confirms-changes.html

"0870 numbers (which currently exhibit a charge of about 8p per minute during the day) will drop such that they are no more than geographic numbers (as in 01/02 numbers). They will be removed from NTS determination (number translation services)."

I think this means that there will no longer be geographical-equivalent numbers.

Ah! Well, if they cost the same as geographic numbers then it's not a problem. However (from the same article) "there are no planned changes to 0844/0845 numbers"...

Also, you say:

there will no longer be geographical-equivalent numbers

Do you mean that there will no longer be geographical equivalents to e.g. 0870 numbers, or that there will no longer be 0870 numbers and suchlike? (Sorry if this should be obvious but I'm getting quite confused here.)

Actually I misread it (it isn't very clear!). At the end of the article, Steve says that advertisers will have to publish the geographical number alongside the 0870 number.
